The umbilical cord

At the beginning of pregnancy, when the fertilized egg implants in the uterus, the umbilical cord begins to develop. Initially, it measures approximately 15 millimeters and grows with the baby, reaching a length of about 50 to 60 centimeters and a diameter of 1.5 to 2 centimeters. It contains three vessels: two umbilical arteries and one umbilical vein.

The arteries are thin but relatively strong, unlike the soft, thick veins. At the end of the fourth week of pregnancy, when the baby's heart begins to beat, it is supplied with blood via the umbilical cord.

The umbilical cord supplies the baby with oxygen and all the essential nutrients it needs. The umbilical vein transports the nutrients and oxygen to the baby, and the two arteries carry waste products like carbon dioxide back to the placenta.

From the 8th week of pregnancy, the mother transfers protein molecules (antibodies) to the fetus that can recognize pathogens. This protects the baby from infections in the first few months after birth. Stem cells can be extracted from the umbilical cord blood and preserved for later use.
