The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is the great mantra for overcoming death, as it protects against all threats and facilitates the process of liberation at the time of death. It is one of the most powerful of the ancient mantras, a call to enlightenment, and a practice for purifying the soul's karma on a profound level. It is beneficial for mental, emotional, and physical health.

It is also a Moksha mantra that bestows longevity and immortality.

According to some Puranas, the Mahamrityunjaya mantra was used by many Rishis, as well as by Sati, during the time when Chandra suffered from the curse of Prajapati Daksha. By reciting this mantra, the effects of Daksha's curse, which could have killed him, were slowed, and Shiva took Chandra and placed her on his head.

This mantra is addressed to Lord Shiva to ward off premature death. It is also chanted while vibhuti is applied to various parts of the body and used in japa or homa (havan) to achieve desired results. While its energy protects and guides initiates, a mantra connects consciousness with its deeper and more lasting nature, and the repetition of the mantra forms japa, the practice of which develops concentration that leads to a transformation of consciousness. While the Gayatri Mantra is intended for purification and spiritual guidance, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is intended for healing rejuvenation and nurturing.
