The olfactory nerve, or cranial nerve, is the first of twelve cranial nerves. It is crucial for the sense of smell. Originating from embryonic nasal tissue, the olfactory nerve is capable of regeneration. It is connected to the amygdala in the brain to automatically trigger the fight-or-flight response, as well as sexual responses. The amygdala also regulates our emotional reactions. Furthermore, it regulates our cardiovascular system, muscle function, and internal organs. Ultimately, the reaction is automatic when we smell something and does not require processing by our neocortex or thinking brain. This means that we react more strongly to smells than to sound, light, and color.
By comparison, Bastet* literally means (feminine) ointment jar. Her name refers to the elaborately decorated vessels in which the Egyptians stored their perfumes. Bastet therefore increasingly became the goddess of perfume and deserves the title 'perfumed protector'.
*Translator's note: Bastet is the daughter of the sun god Ra, depicted as a cat goddess in Egyptian mythology.
