Rue originates from Southern Europe, the Mediterranean region of the Balkan Peninsula as far as Crimea. In antiquity and the Middle Ages, it was a popular medicinal plant and could be found in almost every herb garden.
Today, it is used as a fragrance in the perfume industry and in various forms as a spice. Pregnant women should avoid rue, even as a spice, due to its abortifacient properties! Direct contact with the plant, especially in combination with sunlight, should also be avoided, as it can cause skin irritation. It is said to strengthen the eyes, hence its alternative name, eyeroot.
